Project Introduction

Kusama is an early, unaudited and unoptimized release of Boca. As a testing ground, project parties and developers can develop and deploy parallel chains in Kusama's real-world environment, or try out Poka's governance, pledge, nomination, and verification capabilities. Kusama aims to help you understand how cutting-edge technologies like governance, Staking, and sharding work in real economic conditions.

Project Vision

Designed to help Polkadot understand how cutting edge technology can be introduced in areas such as governance, Staking, and sharding in "real" economic conditions.

Market Demand

Back in early 2015, before the ethereum mainnet went live, there was a test network called Olympic. The test network at that time was offered 5000 Ethereum as a financial reward, inviting everyone to participate in the test and encouraging various methods to stress test the network to test the source code quality and stability of the Ethereum network. According to Polkadot founder Gavin, in terms of actual test performance at the time and in retrospect, the Entire Olympic testing network was rather pretendy, testing for testing's sake, and did not adequately test for potential problems that they were not aware of at the time. In other words, the testing mechanism at the time did not allow them to test the blind spots that they were completely unaware of. Therefore, a real testing network, not testing for testing's sake, but with a functioning economy, is very necessary.

Solution

Gavin launched the Kusama (Canary) test network while working on Polkadot. KSM, a digital asset published by The Kusama Network, has real value and is basically a working public chain. Only if there is a functioning economic model like this, and the entire Kusama network is injected with economic value, can participants and network initiators be seriously involved in testing, and in this way, the completely unknown blind spots mentioned by Gavin can be tested. With the exception of Polkadot, the other public chains seem not to have noticed the shortcomings of the test network in this respect, so that most of the test networks are coin-free or have test coins, and none of them operate as real projects like Kusama. This is one of the innovations that Polkadot has brought to Kusama and Polkadot, making them more flexible and creative, and ultimately making Polkadot more robust and safe to evolve quickly.

Project Implementation Mechanism

Kusama is Boca's "canary network." Kusama is an experimental development network designed for Boca's main network. Its mission is to "Expect Chaos." Third party developers can also deploy their products on Kusama for testing before moving them to the main network for launch. Many public chains have open test networks, such as ethereum's Ropsten, Kovan and Rinkeby networks. The tokens on these test networks are worthless, and there is no reliable economic model, which makes it impossible to operate the token-based governance system. Kusama, unlike Boca code, is a relatively independent public chain that issues KSM tokens and builds a separate economic model, allowing boca teams and third-party developers to test the full range of technologies in a real economic and governance environment. Boca's innovations will be implemented at Kusama first (for example, Kusama's parallel chain slot auction precedes Boca). This means Kusama is not only a test network, but also a pilot network for boca's main network. Kusama's mission, of course, is not just to be used for Boca testing, but to develop its own ecosystem where third-party developers can host their products on the Kusama network instead of deploying them on Boca's main network, enjoying the barriers to entry and flexibility that Kusama has over Boca's main network.

Token Usage Scenarios

Governance: KSM token holders can vote on network governance. Equity consensus collateral: The network verifier of the relay chain needs to pledge the KSM token to run the node. Join network pledge: a certain amount of KSM token is pledged when the parallel chain joins the network. Handling charges: KSM is used to pay the handling charges incurred for cross-chain information transfer.

Characteristic

1. Kusama is a large pre-test platform for the Boca Network, where all experimental ideas can be implemented. 2. Kusama is functionally no different from the main net Boca, and technically identical to boca. 3. Kusama sacrifices some security but has high throughput TPS. Kusama is ideally suited for low-security but throughput projects with a wide range of applications in games, entertainment, social, and more. 4. Any new features that are deployed on Boca need to be deployed, tested, and successfully migrated to Boca.

Technical Characteristics

In terms of technology, since Polkadot and Kusama are governed decentralized and without any licensing, the two networks will develop independently, and whether they tend to converge or diverge over time is determined by the respective communities. Kusama was released as an early version with the same code as Polkadot, meaning they shared the same underlying architecture: a multi-chain, heterogeneous sharding design based on proof of Nominating Interest (NPoS). They also share key innovations such as on-chain governance, heat exchange Runtime for upgrades on fork-free chains, and cross-chain messaging for interoperability purposes. That said, Polkadot and Kusama share most of the underlying technology. Eventually Kusama and Polkadot will operate as separate, separate networks with their own communities, their own governance, and their own complementary application scenarios, although they will continue to be closely related and many teams may deploy applications to both networks simultaneously.

Release Mechanism

Issue volume: initial volume 10 million KSM, inflation 10% per year

Project Highlights

1. The project can build commercial applications based on Kusama in a real network environment and migrate to boca's main network after Polkadot is officially launched, saving a lot of testing time. 2. The platform has a democratic operating system that provides space for radical innovation. It also allows developers to launch their particular blockchains from multiple sources and connect them to a main network. Kusama contains the latest and most efficient technology tools introduced by the Web 3.0 Foundation and Parity technology. As such, it gives developers the opportunity to take advantage of the provided technical tools to launch their own blockchains through a rapidly iterative and well-reviewed process before deploying them to Polkadot. Therefore, it provides the best parallel chain and relay chain operation. Kusama has faster governance parameters and lower barriers to entry than Polkadot.

Incentive Mechanism

1. One hundredth of boca's genesis main net DOT token (W3F currently holds 100,000 DOT tokens) is reserved as the ultimate incentive for Kusama stakeholders and the community. 2. In the early stage, you can apply for certification on Kusama's official website with DOT and get 1:1 airdrop reward, or you can get 0.1 KSN for advance experience by using a GitHub account to raise issues and other channels. 3. You can also get block bonus when you run for node status. At present, the node bonus is for the first 130 nodes. Kusama's voting also takes into account voting participation to accommodate voting bias and ensure efficient and fair voting. The voting weight is also determined by the number of tokens and the length of time they are locked up. Those who do not want to lock up can also vote, but their voting power is reduced by 90% compared to those who do.

Points

Kusama is a public link set up for a major experiment in Polkadot networks. One major difference between Kusama and Polkadot is that Kusama adjusts network governance parameters to allow faster evolution of the network. For example, the voting period is 7 days and the implementation period is 8 days after the voting. Kusama's infrastructure includes Relay Chain, Parachains, and Bridges. Relay Chain is the main blockchain of Kusama network, and all Kusama nodes run on Relay Chain. Parachains are parallel blockchains that connect to the Relay Chain and are maintained by their own network validators, Collators. Bridges are special blockchains that connect Parachains to external networks like Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Market Commentary

KSM is boca DOT's experimental chain, also known as the antecedent chain. So, we don't have to worry about it at all. Moreover, there is now a boost in the activity of charging KSM transaction fees. The value of KSM's investment is indisputable.

KOL

Wisedear: "AS Kusama's token, KSM is already a more mature currency. I personally think it is very suitable for investment, the established exchange currency is also very optimistic about KSM. China Currency has opened the KSM top-up at 16:00 on March 26, and opened the KSM/USDT and KSM/QC transactions at 14:00 on March 29. China currency has also launched an unprecedented KSM top-up fee free activity. Therefore, the current KSM rise is also very good."

Competitors

Kusama's heterogeneous sharding is more scalable, Gas expensive, and difficult to develop than the Sharding structure of Ethereum 2.0. However, as a new player in the public chain circuit, Kusama cannot compete with Ethereum in terms of infrastructure and ecological applications. It may be possible to bridge Ethereum in the future. Let its own ecology and ethereum ecology grow in tandem.

Project Risk

The main risk of Kusama is instability. Kusama and Boca are extremely complex technologies and may face unpredictable "chaos" in the future, which will first appear in Kusama. Therefore, stability and security cannot be guaranteed for projects deployed in Kusama. In terms of economic models, most of the KSM tokens are now released, and after the slot auction starts, there may be a significant decrease in actual circulation due to a large amount of pledge demand. The inflation rate of KSM token is 10% in the first year. Deflation is mainly destroyed by the Treasury, so we need to pay attention to the subsequent inflation risk.

Values

1, ensure the pathfinder Polkadot (just need) each large network game need after many times of tests, constantly adjust and eventually to the market, and the game will be constantly updated content, also need to be tested, so generally large network game will have their own test server, you can experience and test new content in advance, We didn't update the content to the official server until there were no problems. Even with games, blockchain projects directly involving assets should have a testing network, so Kusama was essential for Polkadot. In the same way, many polkadot-based ecological projects are aware of the need for Kusama's role, and they are also worried about unforeseen problems if they go directly to Polkadot. They also need to test in advance on Polkadot's test network. Until there are no problems, Kusama is also necessary for Polkadot's ecological projects. Kusama is a necessary test network for Polkadot and the Polkadot ecological project. Officials say that Kusama should exist for a long time, not just for a short period of time, which establishes Kusama as a pathfinder for Polkadot's development. 2. Value reproduction here is mainly about two aspects of value. On the one hand, some functions required by Polkadot will be tested in Kusama in advance, which makes some important functions that affect network value appear in Kusama and Polkadot one after the other. Such as the previous mainnet online, open transfer, at the end of this year or next year will appear parallel chain slot auction. Get the rhythm right and you won't miss out on development milestones and reap the rewards. On the other hand, Polkadot ecological projects also do tests on Kusama, and these tests often have incentives of their own, either direct rewards or learning about Polkadot, Creating a test network with tokens and economic models for your own projects on the Kusama network will both increase the demand for KSM and create value discovery opportunities for eco-project test networks. Similarly, there is an opportunity for these eco-projects to update their test networks in tandem with their development on the main network. Several well-known Polkadot eco-projects have made it clear that they intend to launch their own parallel chains on Kusama, including: Acala, Chainlink, ChainX, Phala Network, Polkaswap, Moonbeam, and more. As a result, the corresponding values on Polkadot are copied on the Kusama network in advance, which is one of Kusama's key potentials. Polkadot is currently planning to open 100 slots in its trunk chain (100 is the official provisional number, the actual number will be determined later), that is to say, it will link 100 parallel chains. With so many parallel links in a single relay chain, it's almost full capacity. But this is still a significant step away from connecting all networks as Polkadot envisioned. When Polkadot is upgraded to Polkadot V2, parallel links can be trunk chains (nested trunk chains), This means that Polkadot's current trunk chain can be linked to a para-relay-chain, which in turn has 100 slots, which can be linked to 100 parallel chains, which can be linked to the next parallel chain, and so on. Polkadot can be infinitely scalable. All blockchains can be linked together. Kusama is now an independent network, but it is likely to become one of the first parallel relay chains to officially join the Polkadot ecosystem and represent the first step in Polkadot scaling from 100 to unlimited. At the same time, Kusama's conversion means that the original ecology of Polkadot has been opened up to Kusama, which also brings huge flow to Kusama itself. So Kusama has a lot of promise in that sense.
